10 easy topics to choose a consultancy -and not be fired for-

As we have seen getting an advise is not easy all the time. First we have to recognize that we need help for the task (analyse, DESign, CONstruction or OPEration) in our business; who can know better OUR biz -this is always a question that would arise anytime, anywhere by anybody-

Business is what move organization on (profit, non for profit & governmental) the reason "TO BE"  keep us going, when the technology started some 2MM years ago, the human business run and run and.......

Today technology has going farther than mechanical & electrical but more electronically. so the concepts like BIG DATA, or mobility or commuting or anyone you think goes beyond the equipment, wire & cable, storage, processing, telecoms themselves.  Human ubiquity could be the word to describe in time & space what we are doing in this S.XXI

Up to date we can carry all of our task in the pocket or purse with a mobile gadget (phone call, schedule, file, office, pictures, calculation, recording, and.... a tons of new APPs that make us the business & personal easier than 5 or 6 years ago.

So for those well seasoned or novices DC owners or investors  these are my 10  steps to get an excellent Consultant firm or guy hired experience .   numbering is just for having a reference are not a path to follow

1.  Ask your pairs that have hired a consultancy service Almost always we know somebody that has buy or contract an asset or service that is alike what we are looking for. In this industry we have mates to ask how they have done to solve, this is the case in consultancy, they can refer the firm or professional that can be asked for our challenge to help finding alternatives of solution. Good experience give a good chance to get success

2.  ALWAYS look into more than one consultant to find out / cross / try / the solution alternatives In this business as in medical one, NOBODY know EVERYTHING about ANYTHING; so consultancy has to be done by a team of experts (surgeon,  anesthesiologists, radiologist, pathologist, nurses,.....) so COOLing, ENErgy, IT transport, SAFEty, SECurity, ARCHitec have to been consulted AS A TEAM, because in this kind of facilities -like in human body- any treatment will IMPACT other functions.

3.  Any preset solution on our mind MUST BE willing to MACs;   We have dream in a home with mountain landscape, near a lake, with a dock , with a swimming pool nearby, but we live in Abu Dabi; well "compadre" your desire will cost a fortune.  HP facilities can include a lot of technological solutions (free cooling, Energy cell generation, PUE 0.1, solar cell illumination......) but not all of them have the same feasibility nor all can be set anywhere.

4.   Consultant statements can be opposite of what we want to listen We know our business so we know our market & industry and we would like to have a consultant that understand them as we do. Well sometimes a different point of view will enhance the consultancy experience. Be prepare to have your ears but specially your mind open to listen, analyse and understand what our consultant is telling us.

5. DO NOT be afraid to FIRE a consultant;  as any other service, it must be fair enough for you (not only for the consultant professional) set a contract clear, with a defined scope, with deliveries (documents, table, quotes, comments and so on)  DO NOT leave only in good will your business project (here is quite different from medical advising jeje)

6. SET a full price not per hour   Of course if you pay your own therapist -any speciality- by the hour, good for you!  in MCF  consultancy projects that can take 18-24 months with 4-6 hs meeting; 3 or 4 four days a week, this could be VERY VERY expensive if the rate is  $ xxx per hour per specialist. So it will be better to have a fixed amount set in the contract -with clear scope for both sides-.

7. CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, are required -of course- but   hands on EXPERIENCE is a must;   As scout my knowledge has been studying but my skills have been developed on the field, doing not saying; of course I do not know about all topics. As you face -as consultant- the real fire you will apply all the drafts to combat the flames; no other way , not modeling, not drawing but learning how to solve issues on the field.

8.  ALWAYS ask for full documentation of all alternatives saying or commenting solutions will be blown by the wind. Every consultant has to write not only its DESigns, or recommendation or report -to be payed- , but clearly to avoid misunderstandings that can carry costly errors on the field. Documentation makes traceability, accountability and responsibility before you as customer as well before law.

9.  Evaluate if consultancy know your business and/or is willing to learn it   Consultants MUST understand customers business, not all medicine works well in all bodies; organizations are that entities that have different needs but quite similar, so consultancy has to find out which, how, when, where, the alternatives of solution ougth to be set in their MCF.

10. ULTIMATE decision is yours  Reports, tables, quotes, calculations,  are made by consultants, this give you a parameter to choose the best decision in order to fulfill your business Mission, Vision and economical goals; none can take your place for decide, and none has the responsibility to do.

Consultancy is good business for both parties, what we have to do is to be clear in our expectations, skills, knowledge; the first tool in consultancy is $0.05 cents of  common sense

Or what do you think?
